This will be a year of many, many firsts for you newlyweds. Perhaps, you are moving into your first home together. Maybe, you will even have your first little one. And, for the first time, you will be celebrating all of the Jewish holidays together.
Uh-oh.
Suddenly realized that you registered for towels, dishes and cookware but not for any Judaica? Not to worry, Ketubah Ketubah is here to help. Below is a list of items that you need so that you and your sweetheart can begin your Jewish lives together.
Items for the Home:
- Home Blessing: This ornamental print blesses your new home. The blessing reads as follows: “May there be light, joy, peace and good will to this home. May there be an abundance of blessings and holiness in every room and every corner. And may the light of your Torah and commandments be ever radiant within it. Amen."
- Mezuzah: A mezuzah is a decorative container that is filled with a piece of parchment and is inscribed with particular biblical passages from Deuteronomy. The mezuzah is affixed to the right side of each doorpost in the house (except for the bathroom and the closet doorways) and is placed at an inwards incline. The following blessing is said when you are putting up a mezuzah in your home: “Baruch atah adonai, eloheynu melech ha-olam, asher kid’shanu b’mitzvotav v’tzivanu lik’bo-ah mezuzah.”
- Tzedakah Box: Charity begins at home. A tzedakah box allows you to fulfill this age-old adage, as it is a container used to collect money for tzedakah, or charity.
