| Family Day and Another Six Weeks of Winter! |
Ontario's newest holiday, Family Day, just flew by. With all of the snow we have had it was a perfect day to take advantage of Ontario's winter climate. There are countless activities that you can enjoy with your family for the remainder of the winter, some examples can be found here.
If Wiarton Willie is right we will be enjoying this weather for the long-haul. For those of you who are believers in the Groundhog Day tradition, Willie saw his shadow at the beginning of this month, predicting six more wintery weeks to go!
Did you know?
Groundhogs, also called Woodchucks are part of the rodent family. As such their teeth grow continuously back toward the roof of their mouths creating a risk of becoming embedded. This creates a need to constantly gnawing on wood or hard objects to keep their teeth sharp and at a manageable length.
Across Canada there are other groundhogs whose predictions have become part of this tradition of prognostication. They include Nova Scotia's Schubenacadie Sam, Ontario's Gary the Groundhog, Brandon Bob of Manitoba and Alberta's Balzac Billy. |
