IN GEAR!

For the Nissan 5K

On Sunday July 13th, our office (along with friends, family and patients) ran/walked the Nissan 5K at the Distillery in support of the Nissan Foundation, Meals on Wheels for Seniors. Some walked, some ran but we all finished!

We would like to extend a special thank you to those patients (Peter, Penny, Sam, Philip and Monica) that came out to support us this year by running or walking with us.

A splendid time was had by everyone. After the race, the office met at Dr. Brown’s home for some much needed food and beverages. Congratulations to everyone for a job well done!

Salivating Over Saliva!
How much do you know about your spit?

According to the U.S. Surgeon General's Report, "saliva contains components that can directly attack bacteria which cause decay... saliva contains antimicrobial components, as well as minerals that can help rebuild tooth enamel after attack by acid-producing, decay-causing bacteria."

Where does saliva come from?
Saliva is produced in the salivary glands. The average production of saliva is about 1 litre a day, or 30 litres per month. This may seem like a lot of saliva, but remember it is being produced continuously for 24 hours every day.

There are three pairs of salivary glands in the mouth. The parotid salivary glands are in the cheeks, between the ear and nose, the submandibular salivary glands are on the floor of the mouth, in the area of the lower molar teeth and the sublingual salivary glands are under the tongue.

What are the functions of saliva?

For Your Sweet Tooth!
Who loves candy?
I know I do.
I love hard candy, gummies, chocolate, I love it all!

You've been told time and time again that candy causes tooth decay, but that doesn't mean you can't enjoy the occasional treat. If you are going to indulge, there are some things you can do to limit the damage done to your teeth.
  • Try to eat your treat during a meal. There is increased saliva production while eating, which helps to flush out acid caused by bacteria.
  • Chewing sugarless gum after a meal increases the amount of saliva in the mouth as well.
  • Avoid biting down on hard candy.
  • Stay away from sticky toffees and candy.
  • Drink water throughout the day.
  • Brush your teeth after every meal (even at work).
  • Bring enough candy for everyone or at least save some for me
Remember, if you're going to snack, and only candy will fill the craving, protect your teeth, you can worry about your waist line when you hit the gym tonight!

BOOKS, MUSIC, MOVIES and STUFF

Some of our staff recommendations this month:

Dr. Brown: (movie - current)
The Dark Knight
the ultimate fight between good and evil. Heath Ledger's portrayal of the Joker is a clear representation of how a brilliant mind without a noble purpose can create enormous chaos and hurt. Heath Ledger gives the performance of a lifetime!

Lovina : (product)
Pinot Grigio
Have you ever had a light crisp white wine with smooth and silky overtones? If not, try a Pinot Grigio. It is fast becoming one of my favourite grapes, especially on a hot summer day!

Kim: (product)
Tide to Go Instant Stain Remover Pen
Have you ever been eating pasta and gotten a fleck of that yummy tomato sauce on yourself? With the Tide to Go pen, worries be gone! Simply mark it on the stain and it is instantly gone! Works for any fresh food or drink stain. Now, that's what I call amazing!

Tami: (book - 2007)
Eleven Minutes (by Paulo Coelho)
A story about a young girl living an innocent life in a Brazilian village and her saga of sexual discovery and love.

Lisa: (movie - current)
Sex and the City : The Movie
This movie will make you laugh and cry at the same time.
A definite chick flick!

Kristin: (magazine - current)
Fine Cooking
If you love to cook (or eat), this magazine is fantastic.
A fabulous resource for cooking techniques and scrumptious recipes.
