February 2008 Edition

Do you know someone who has made a commitment to become healthier in 2008?
If you do, make sure that seeing a dentist is on their to-do list. Good dental health begins with clean gums and teeth and regular checkups.

Did you know that our office welcomes new patients?
If you are happy with your dental experience in our office, we would be grateful if you could tell your friends and family about us. In fact, why not pass this newsletter along so that they can get an idea of what we are all about.

Thank you to all our patients who have referred new patients our way. We consider your referrals the highest form of flattery.

Have a glorious February. We hope you and your family enjoy many smiles during this Leap Year!

Office News!

Seeing is Believing

After many years of wearing glasses and being dependent on them, Dr. Brown and Kristin decided to venture into the world of corrective laser eye surgery.

In the cold month of January, Kristin and Dr. Brown underwent PRK and Lasik treatment, respectively. What an amazing experience!

Dr. Brown is even seeing better than 20/20 in one eye. The verdict is still out on Kristin.

If you would like more information about our experience, please ask us at your next visit.

We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the Bochner Eye Institute (for performing the surgeries) and to Dr. Mike Rotholz (our optometrist) for taking such great care of us!

A Blast to the Past!

Every February we celebrate Valentine's Day by giving candy, flowers and cards to those we love. We do this in honour of Saint Valentine. You may be wondering, "Who is St. Valentine"?

One legend holds that Valentine was a priest who served during third century Rome. At the time, Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those that were married.

With this thought in mind, he outlawed marriage for young men in hopes of building a stronger military base.

Supposedly, Valentine decided this decree was unfair and chose to marry young couples secretly. When Emperor Claudius II found out about Valentine's actions, he had him put to death.

Perhaps we'll never know the true identity and story behind the man named St. Valentine, but this much is for sure...February has been the month to celebrate love for a long time, dating clear back to the Middle Ages.

So, on behalf of our entire team, we would like to wish everyone a Happy Valentine's Day. May the month of February remind us all of those we love and have loved.

Being Heart Healthy

February is National Heart Month. To ensure our office has got your heart in mind, we have invested in the purchase of and training in the use of an automatic external defibrillator (AED).

What is an AED?

An Automated External Defibrillator is a machine that can monitor heart rhythms. Basically, it can tell if the heart has stopped beating. If required, the machine can then deliver an electric shock to the heart. Most of the time, this shock will restart the heart.

According to The Heart and Stroke Foundation, approximately 40,000 cardiac arrests occur in Canada annually, with 80% of them occurring outside of a hospital setting. With each passing minute, the probability of survival declines by 7% to 10%. Defibrillation improves survival rates by up to 30% if delivered in the first few minutes. AEDs, in combination with CPR, can increase survival rates to 50% or more.

In a nutshell, heart defibrillators can save lives
.

We are committed to improving health and safety in our office! And in case you were wondering, our entire team is also trained in CPR.
