HOT WEATHER...

A look at the dental convention in Ocho Rios

Welcome to sunny Jamaica!

Members of our office team (Dr. Brown, Lisa, Tami and Dragana) attended a dental convention in Ocho Rios, Jamaica in February.

The trip was filled with education, fun and frolicking but most importantly, golf. Dr. Brown had his most impressive golf game ever, shooting 93 and winning 3rd place in the golf tournament. Way to go, Dr. Brown!

How much do you know about your tongue?

Your tongue is made up of groups of muscles that run in all directions to carry out the tongue's many functions. Underneath your tongue is a soft, thin skin called mucous membrane. Your tongue is fastened to the jaw bone (mandible) and to the front of your throat.

The front of the tongue is extremely flexible and works in a variety of ways, from working with the teeth to create different sounds and words, to helping you eat by moving food around your mouth while you chew. The muscles at the back of the tongue not only aid in the eating process but also in the formation of certain sounds, like the letter 'k' and the hard 'g' in 'go'.

The top of your tongue is covered by hundreds of small bumps called papillae. Inside the papillae are 'taste buds' for picking up different flavours. Salty or sweet tastes are near the front of the tongue, sour tastes are mainly along the sides of the tongue and the ones for bitter tastes are at the back of the tongue. We have almost 10,000 taste buds inside our mouths! As we age, the taste buds begin to disappear from the sides and the roof of our mouth, leaving taste buds mostly on the tongue.

Hot Stuff!
What should you do if you burn your tongue or the roof of your mouth?

The best thing to do is to suck on an ice cube as soon as possible to help neutralize some of the tissue reaction and lessen the pain. The ice will also reduce the chance of any additional swelling and irritation but be sure not to actually bite into the ice as you could crack your tooth and end up with more problems than you started with!

If ice is not available, drink some cold water, holding the water inside your mouth until the pain stops. Spit the water out when it warms up and have some more cold water.
Any burn in your mouth should clear up in a few days. In the meantime, be sure to avoid spicy foods, acidic foods and foods with sharp edges such as potato chips, which can further irritate your burn.

Heart-Healthy Meals

Coconut and shrimp soup

  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 1/2 tbsp Thai red curry paste
  • 1 red bell pepper, cut into strips
  • 1 (5.6 oz) can coconut milk
  • 2 cups chicken broth
  • 2-3 stalks lemongrass, white parts only, crushed (optional)
  • 2 tbsps lime juice
  • 3 tbsps fresh basil, chopped
  • 2/3 cup coriander, chopped
  • 5 spring onions, cut into 1 inch lengths
  • 12 large / jumbo shrimp, uncooked
  • 1/2 pint cherry tomatoes, halved
  • 200g dried rice vermicelli
VEGETARIAN alternative: omit shrimp and add snowpeas, fried tofu puffs or bean sprouts. Substitute chicken broth for vegetable broth.

Put vermicelli in large bowl, cover with boiling water (hot tap water works too). Soak for 5 minutes. Drain. Divide among bowls. Top with bean sprouts and fried tofu puffs (if using).

Heat oil. Add red curry paste and red bell peppers. If using lemongrass, throw it in now too. Stir-fry a few minutes till fragrant. Add coconut milk and stock. Bring to boil. Add shrimp, tomatoes and spring onions. Stir mixture and heat thoroughly (2-5 minutes). Pour in lime juice. Season to taste with salt and pepper (if necessary). Ladle hot soup into bowls of noodle. Sprinkle with fresh basil and coriander.
