August 2009 - Tips, eNews, and More

Someone once told us that there is no good weather, there is no bad weather, there is only weather. Our advice is to dress appropriately, grab an umbrella and enjoy the summer months. The warm weather outside is great for staying active and the rainy days that move you indoors can be used to practice your colder month activities.

Are you heading off to school?
Many post secondary institutions offer health plans that include dental coverage. If you are enrolled in a post secondary program, remember to look into the coverage offered to you.

We'd love to see your smile!
Summer vacations will be winding down in the upcoming weeks. School supplies, carpools and daily routine are just around the corner for many households. Even if there are no children around your home, many of our patients find that the summer months are more flexible when it comes to time. Whether you are heading back to school, back to work, or have been at your desk all summer, now is a great time to come in for a check up and cleaning.

Until next time, keep smiling,

Why does your dentist want to schedule another appointment with you so soon - even if today's oral examination was perfect?

Regular dental visits are essential to maintaining healthy teeth and gums. For maximum benefit, a good home care regimen must be supplemented with an examination at least every six months. Depending on the status of your oral health, your dentist may recommend more frequent visits.

We all have band aids an anti-bacterial cream for those little scrapes and bruises but how do you manage injuries to your teeth? We have compiled a few tips to help you deal with dental emergencies in your home. Remember: seek professional help for any tooth, gum or jaw injuries.

Tooth Aches - Never put any pain killers on the gum as it can burn the gum tissue. Clean your mouth by rinsing it out with warm water, and gently floss around the tooth to remove debris. If the problem persists contact your dentist.

Broken Tooth - Contact your dentist immediately! Rinse your mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress to minimize swelling.

Knocked out Tooth
- Rinse your mouth out very gently, but do not scrub the tooth, or remove any tissue attached to it. When rinsing your mouth out be sure to block the drain to prevent the tooth from disappearing. Keep the tooth in a small container or cup of milk, bring it with you and visit the dentist.

Bitten Tongue - Wipe the area clean with a cloth, and apply a cold compress to minimize any swelling.

In any emergency seek professional medical help immediately. For those minor scrapes and bruises these tips will help you start your trip to recovery on the right foot.
