January 20th - 26th, 2008 is National Non Smoking Week.

Everyone knows by now that smoking is harmful to your general health. First and second-hand smoke causes breathing and other systemic problems and can lead to cancer in some cases. However, some people are not aware of the very direct relationship between smoking and poor oral health.

Although smoking can provide immediate stress relief and something to do in a social environment, the short and long term consequences far outweigh these short-lived sham benefits. Tissue damage, tooth damage, deteriorating fillings, root canal therapy, damaging wear to the biting surfaces and sides of teeth increased effects of gum and
bone disease and tooth loss ALL can be direct and indirect effects of a tobacco/smoking habit. These effects can occur over a short period of time for some individuals depending on other habits or oral hygiene.
